Inov-8 X Talon 212 Trail Running Shoe
After training in these shoes for a few months before the Tough Mudder, I was as confident as Superwoman that I would fly through the obstacles with ease. The Inov-8 X Talon 212 were, after all, the best trail running shoes I’ve ever owned. So, did they keep me soaring or did I finally find the shoe’s kryptonite?
The start of the run was just like any other day on the trail by my house- hard packed dirt and lots of steep hills. About a mile in, our first obstacle (kiss of mud) was before us and I dove in. I came out with my shoes soaked in mud and for the first time, I felt the weight of the shoes on my feet. But no time to think, had to start running again. This time for two miles straight. I was so worried about getting blisters because my feet were sliding around inside the shoe but when I got to the next obstacle, my feet felt fine and my shoes didn’t feel wet. Amazing!
I went through mud several more times over the course of the run and any time I’d go into the water, they’d come out looking brand new again. The water drained very quickly from the shoes and seemed to dry just as quick. About half way into the run I had to stop so I could dig all of the little rocks out of my shoes. No one else on my team had to do that (they were wearing different shoes). There was so much crap in there that I thought I was going to slice my feet up. I decided to tie the shoes much tighter when I put them back on in hopes that nothing else would get in. Unfortunately, it happened again but not enough to the point where I had to stop and dig them out again. I’m sure that if I were wearing regular running socks, it would have bothered me quite a bit but I was wearing my magic socks (see review here) so I had extra padding on my feet. I finished the race only having to clear out my shoes once. I checked the bottoms of the shoes every so often to see if mud had stuck to them and they were clear. Oh, and I charged up Everest with no slipping. Superwoman status? Still in check.
I didn’t donate my shoes at the end of the run because I knew that I’d want to use them again for my upcoming Spartan Race (and probably for all of my other mud runs). My feet were fresh with not one hot spot or blister and for that I am truly grateful. I would definitely recommend these shoes to anyone who wants to run trails with super confidence!
